NATO’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, was at a ceremony in Vilnius today to mark the official opening of six new regional NATO headquarters. The NATO Force Integration Units or NFIUs are based in the eastern part of the alliance. They will help facilitate the rapid deployment of Allied forces to the region, support collective defence planning and assist in coordinating training and exercises.

The roll out of the NFIUs was agreed at the Wales Summit last year. The units are part of measures in the Readiness Action Plan, designed to provide assurance for NATO allies.

The NFIUs are located in Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Each NFIU will be manned by a total of 40 staff, half of them coming from the host nation.
